Professor Olsen

Professor Olsen commands more than 15 years of teaching experience at the university, two-year college and high school level, including courses in English composition; American, British and world literature; American history; and American government.
A former All-America swimmer, NCAA team and relay champion, and U.S. National Team member, he graduated from the University of Texas with bachelors and masters degrees in journalism. After a decade in civilian and military broadcasting and print roles -- including a year with the American Forces Korea Network in Seoul -- he returned to Texas to earn his B.A. in English and teaching certification.
Since then, he's coached swimming at the high school and college level, twice being named Texas high school coach of the year for leading teams to two UIL state titles and a third-place finish. His college teams both placed in the Top 5 at the NJCAA National Champions, and he coached Olympic qualifiers from Micronesia, Papua New Guinea and Fiji.
Completing 18 graduate hours of English at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and 18 hours of graduate American history and government from Ashland University has allowed him to teach those subjects at the college level.
Professor Olsen has been married to his wife, Susan, for more than 15 years. She is a kindergarten teacher in the Leander ISD. He has four children -- Olivia (a graduate of the University of North Texas); Mark (a student at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, Calif.); and Gretchen and Heidi, both freshmen at Vista Ridge H.S.
