Joe D. Clayton Jr.

Command Sergeant Major Joe D. Clayton Jr. was born in Clinton, Oklahoma. He completed high school in Oklahoma and joined the Army in 1987. CSM Clayton attended Basic Training and completed Advanced Individual Training as a Cannon Crewmember (13B) at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Upon completion he was assigned to 2 nd Battalion 6 th Field Artillery in Hanau, Germany from February 1988 to September 1991. CSM Clayton served as an Ammunition Specialist and Cannoneer during Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield while assigned to the 2 nd Battalion 6 th Field Artillery to include duty in Saudi Arabia. He was then assigned to the 3 rd Battalion 11 th Field Artillery, at Fort Lewis, Washington where he served as a gunner on an M-198 Medium Towed Howitzer from October 1991 to April 1993. His next assignment was with the 2 nd Armored Calvary Regiment in Fort Polk, Louisiana where he served as a Gunner and Chief of Section from May 1993 to November 1995.

He was then assigned to the 1 st Battalion 15 th Field Artillery, Camp Casey, Korea from January 1996 to January 1997. After returning from overseas, he attended Drill Sergeant School at Fort Benning, GA. After completion of Drill Sergeant Duty he was assigned to the 1 st Battalion 17 th Field Artillery where he served as a Platoon/Gunnery Sergeant from September 1999 to July 2001. From August 2001 to August 2003 he served as the Commandant of Cadets at the University of Hawaii (SROTC) Battalion. His First Sergeant time was served in Fort Sill, Oklahoma from September 2003 to October 2007 in the NCOA Warrior Leader Course, Charlie Battery 2 nd Battalion 18 th Field Artillery, and HHB 75 th Fires Brigade. He deployed on a Military Transition Team to Mosul, Iraq from December 2007 to December 2008. After redeployment he became the FCoE G3/5/7 Operations Sergeant Major from January 2009 to December 2009. His Command Sergeant Major time was from January 2010 to June 2014.

Some of CSM Clayton’s military schools and education include Air Assault School, Drill Sergeant School, Warrior Leader Course, Advanced Leaders Course, Senior Leaders Course, Equal Opportunity School, Unit Movement Course, M109A6 (Paladin) Commanders Course, TAITC Course, U.S. Army Risk Management Safety Course, First Sergeant Course, U.S. Army Sergeant’s Major Academy (NRC#36). He holds an Associate Degree in Applied Science/Administration and Management Studies and is pursuing his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Global Supply Chain Management.

CSM Clayton’s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (4 th award), Army Commendation Medal (2 nd award), Army Achievement Medal (11 thaward), Army Good Conduct Medal (8 th award), National Defense Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon #4, Southwest Asia Medal BSS-3, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, GWTSM, Overseas Service Ribbon (4 th award), Liberation of Kuwait Medal (Saudi Arabia), Army Service Ribbon, Drivers Mechanics Badge (W), Air Assault Badge, Combat Action Badge, and Drill Sergeant Identification Badge. He is also a member of the Honorable Order of Saint Barbara. Command Sergeant Major Clayton is married to the former Tammie D. Cook of Louisiana and they have two daughter’s Jayla and Alaysha
