Principal's Message

Arista Owens-McGowan, Principal

DeSoto ISD has long held a philosophy of growing our own staff into administrators. Arista Owens-McGowan, the new principal at DeSoto High School, is an example of a proven, dedicated educator being tapped to take the ‘flagship’ campus to new heights. Her results at Cockrell Hill Elementary have been outstanding with the highest district scores in all four indexes including student achievement, student progress, closing performance gaps and postsecondary readiness. In addition, the campus climate is second to none with parent involvement, compassionate teachers and a culture of students-first permeating the people and facility.

“I’m excited about the future and leading the Eagles,” stated Owens-McGowan. “We have target areas I want to improve on right away - primarily parental involvement and accountability of both teachers and students. We need to be working together to reach every child and help them achieve.”

McGowan, an educator for over 19 years, has been with DeSoto ISD since 2008 - first as an AP at DHS and Amber Terrace Elementary before leading Cockrell Hill. She received her Bachelor’s in Chemistry from the University of Oklahoma and the Master’s of Education from UTA. She and her husband of over 20 years have two wonderful sons.
